Key takeaways

  • Five steps are enough: cleanse, treat, hydrate, protect the barrier, sleep.
  • Use one active ingredient per night and introduce new ones slowly.
  • Apply products from thinnest to thickest texture.
  • Consistency matters more than any single product.

Why an evening routine matters

Your skin repairs itself overnight. Cell turnover peaks while you sleep, and moisture escapes more easily through the skin at night. A consistent evening routine supports both processes.

The good news: you don't need ten steps. Five well-chosen ones cover cleansing, treatment, hydration and protection.

Step 1: Cleanse

Remove make-up, sunscreen and the day's pollution with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. Massage for 60 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water.

Should you double cleanse?

If you wear long-wear make-up or water-resistant SPF, start with an oil or balm cleanser, then follow with your usual cleanser.

Step 2: Treat

This is where active ingredients come in. Choose one per night based on your main concern: retinoids for texture and fine lines, AHAs for dullness, or azelaic acid for redness.

Dermatologist tip

Start retinoids twice a week and build up slowly. Never combine them with AHAs on the same night.

Step 3: Hydrate

A moisturiser locks in water and softens the skin. Pick the texture that suits your skin type:

Moisturiser texture by skin type
Skin typeTextureLook for
OilyGel or gel-creamNiacinamide, light humectants
CombinationLight lotionHyaluronic acid, glycerin
DryRich creamCeramides, shea butter
SensitiveFragrance-free creamPanthenol, oat extract

Step 4: Protect the barrier

Finish with a few drops of facial oil or a barrier balm if your skin feels tight. Three signs your barrier needs support:

  1. Stinging when you apply products you usually tolerate
  2. Tightness that lasts after moisturising
  3. Sudden dry patches or breakouts

“A healthy barrier makes every other step work better.”

Step 5: Sleep on it

Sleep is when the routine pays off. Aim for seven to nine hours, use a clean cotton or silk pillowcase, and keep your bedroom cool to reduce overnight water loss.
